Born March 3rd, 1929, L.B. Porter is a 3rd generation native of El Paso, Texas. L.B. (Lawrence Benjamin) Porter was a child prodigy and was tutored in art at the age of twelve.
L.B. attended the Art Department at Texas College of Mines in 1945 and after three years of study, joined the Air Force. After returning to civilian life in 1953, he resumed his education at the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, now New Mexico State, where he received a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, and Masters in Fine Art. He also holds an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from the London Institute of Applied Sciences in England, awarded in May 1972.
An ultra-realist, he works with acrylics, and his subject matter is primarily the land and people of the Southwest. In 1964, he pioneered a new concept by introducing nudes as subjects in contemporary Southwestern scenes and landscapes, which won him significant awards and recognition. His unique style was developed by his use of strong contrasts between light and shadow, or chiaroscuro. In the last 15 years he has enjoyed a new style he calls “New Wave”, which mixes realism with creative decorations.
